What is a RAMA (SQP)?
Being a RAMA means an ongoing commitment, ac琀椀ng responsibly, following the
Code of Prac琀椀ce (h琀琀ps://www.amtra.org.uk/CodeAndGuidance) and advising animal
owners on choice of medicine, their safe and e昀昀ec琀椀ve use, and contribu琀椀ng to
the health and welfare of their animals.
In May 2024 there have been amendments to our Code of Prac琀椀ce. One of the
main changes is around the records that must be kept following a discussion and
prescrip琀椀on medicines b RAMA’s.
Where a medicine is supplied in accordance with a prescrip琀椀on which is not a
wri琀琀en prescrip琀椀on, the person who prescribes the product must make a record
of the reason for prescribing that product; their prescribing ra琀椀onale and discus
ac琀椀ons to moderate any risks.
All quali昀椀ed RAMA’s must adhere to this change.
A RAMA is en琀椀tled to prescribe and/or supply the categories of product that fall
within the scope of the quali昀椀ca琀椀on and the registra琀椀on they hold.
The range of veterinary medicines available falls within the follow distribu琀椀on
classi昀椀ca琀椀ons:
▪ POM-VPS (Prescrip琀椀on Only Medicine – Veterinarian, Pharmacist, SQP) are
used for farm animals and horses to help prevent or reduce the impact of common diseases in groups or individual animals. This includes treatments for things
like internal and external parasites and some vaccines.
▪ NFA-VPS (Non-Food Animal – Veterinarian, Pharmacist, SQP) are only for use
in non-food animals where they may be used rou琀椀nely to prevent or limit the
e昀昀ects of endemic disease (e.g. internal and external parasites).
▪ AVM-GSL (Authorised Veterinary Medicine – General Sales List)
