All RAMA’s must undertake CPD (Con琀椀nuing Professional Development) to
stay on the professional register; h琀琀ps://vmd.defra.gov.uk/register/sqps. This
can come via Organisa琀椀ons such as SCOPS (Sustainable Control of Parasites in
Sheep), COWS (Control of worms Sustainably), NADIS (Na琀椀onal Animal Disease
Informa琀椀on Service) and RUMA (Responsible Use of Medicines Agricultural Alliance) plus a琀琀ending events and webinars. Con琀椀nual learning places importance
on our lifelong learning enabling us to give the best service we can.
It is important to know that a RAMA (SQP) is not quali昀椀ed to make any clinical
assessment, this only falls within the scope of a Veterinary Surgeon. For example,
if a RAMA is told that the animal is scouring or losing condi琀椀on or “just not doing”,
the RAMA must not assume that it is caused by parasites, trace element de昀椀ciency or otherwise. Legally, the advice to be given in these circumstances is to seek
advice from a Veterinary Surgeon.
The scope RAMA’s can cover is huge and mul琀椀-faceted, if only there was a “one
昀椀ts all” plan life would be easier, but sadly that’s not the case. It’s becoming more
complex as technology moves on and more scien琀椀昀椀c studies are carried out.
Preven琀椀on is be琀琀er than cure, planning and knowledge is the key, tes琀椀ng before
trea琀椀ng will pay in the long term. Our aim, along with our vets, is for you to have a
sustainable future in farming.
Do not always look for the lowest cost product, it is be琀琀er to focus on what you
need to achieve the best outcome.
P.S Watch out for 琀椀cks on ca琀琀le and sheep as well as pesky 昀氀ies which can cause bacterial infec琀椀on in ca琀琀le and the risk is now high for strikes in sheep.
