It is important to remember that, in line with The Welfare of Animals (Transport)(England)
Order 2006, livestock must be able to walk independently on all four feet without pain,
which limits the movement of a昀昀ected animals to market or the aba琀琀oir. Iden琀椀fying and effec琀椀vely trea琀椀ng ca琀琀le quickly reduces the likelihood of chronic lameness developing which
could limit future movement of that individual, reducing the e昀케ciency of your system.

Use your veterinary herd health planning 琀椀me to look round your herd with a
pair of ‘fresh eyes’ to obtain a benchmark 昀椀gure of lameness within your herd
Use your Animal Health and Welfare Pathway grant to work with your vet on
lesion iden琀椀昀椀ca琀椀on and treatment protocols
A琀琀end a ‘Foot First Aid’ course, with many being run across the country, to
refresh your knowledge and upskill for when you’re trimming your ca琀琀les’
feet.
U琀椀lisa琀椀on of various grants available to upgrade handling facili琀椀es for safe
examina琀椀on of all four feet for prompt treatment of lame ca琀琀le
Enrolling the services of a quali昀椀ed foot trimmer (check the CHCSB or NACFT
website for loca琀椀ng quali昀椀ed trimmers), especially if handling facili琀椀es are a
challenge or there are a number of ca琀琀le to examine.
